{"id":9146,"date":"2014-01-09T20:34:36","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T19:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.memorialatpeninsula.org\/?p=9146"},"modified":"2020-06-07T05:39:20","modified_gmt":"2020-06-07T04:39:20","slug":"order-of-the-bath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.memorialatpeninsula.org\/?p=9146","title":{"rendered":"Order of the Bath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Order of the Bath<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Most Honourable Order of the Bath<\/strong>&nbsp;(formerly the&nbsp;<strong>Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath<\/strong>)&nbsp;is a Britsh order of chivalry&nbsp;founded by &nbsp;George I&nbsp;on 18 May 1725.&nbsp;The name derives from the elaborate mediaeval&nbsp;ceremony for creating a &nbsp;Knight, which involved bathing&nbsp;(as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as &#8220;Knights of the Bath&#8221;.&nbsp;George I &#8220;erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order&#8221;.&nbsp;He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath,&nbsp;since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The Order consists of the Sovereign (currently Queen Elizabeth II), the Great Master (currently &nbsp;The Prince of Wales),&nbsp;and three Classes of members:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Knight Grand Cross<\/strong>&nbsp; (GCB)&nbsp;<em>or<\/em>&nbsp;<strong>Dame Grand Cross<\/strong>&nbsp;(GCB)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Knight Commander<\/strong>&nbsp; (KCB)&nbsp;<em>or<\/em>&nbsp;<strong>Dame Commander<\/strong>&nbsp;(DCB)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Companion<\/strong>&nbsp;(CB)<\/p>\n<p>Members belong to either the Civil or the Military Division.&nbsp;Prior to 1815, the order had only a single class,&nbsp;<strong>Knight Companion<\/strong>&nbsp;(KB), which no longer exists<span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">.<\/span>&nbsp;Recipients of the Order are now usually senior military officers or senior civil servents.&nbsp;Commonwealth citizens not subjects of the Queen and foreigners may be made Honorary Members.<\/p>\n<p>The Order of the Bath is the fourth-most senior of the British Orders of Chivalry, after The Most Noble Order of the Garter, &nbsp;The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, and The Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick&nbsp;( dormant).&nbsp;The last of the aforementioned Orders, which relates to Ireland, still exists but has been in disuse since the formation, in December 1922, of the Irish Free State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Regimental Orders of the Bath<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Gen Sir John Mogg &#8211;
